“If Music be the Food of Live,” “Sweeter than Roses,” other madrigals, part songs, and music from Purcell’s The Fairy Queen plus a few Shakespeare sonnets come to The Theatre in Washington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 7:30. The evening is the final program in this season’s popular “Smithsonian at Little Washington” series. A new season is being planned to start in the fall.
The vocal group Ensemble Five/One will be joined by James Weaver, harpsichord, of the Smithsonian Chamber Players, in this unusual program given to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the death of England’s great baroque composer, Henry Purcell (16591695). Ensemble Five/One has performed with the Folger Consort, and with the Smithsonian Chamber players at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater.
Amanda Balestrieri, one of the four well-known singers who also include Barbara Hollinshead, Robert Craig, and Guy Lushin, was heard at the Theatre at Washington last December with James Weaver in an earlier program in the “Smithsonian at Little Washington” series.
