garden. Not only does mulch placed around vegetation reduce water evaporation, it also guards against cold-weather damage and helps prevent weeds from setting down roots. Von Trapp advises against using a black plastic lining under mulch. Instead, she recommends using 2 to 3 inches of bark mulch that lets water slowly drain down to the plants.
Shade is also a friend of water conservation and should be incorporated into landscape planning wherever possible. Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “Shade is the Elysium of a hot-climate garden.”
In “The Garden Problem Solvers” (Simon & Schuster), author Catriona Tudor frier suggests utilizing the natural shade provided by broad spreading trees, or building a lath-covered structure made of slats that allows enough light to grow (lowering shade plants while keeping patio space and lattice walkways cool.
Irrigation has become perhaps the most important consideration in these times of environmental consciousness and water conservation.
