Amy Payne started as pitcher but walked three batters and Cyndi Welch came in, in relief and pitched the rest of the game. She gave up eight hits, had two strike outs and walked eight.
Cari Kerr, Angie Atkins, Courtney Welch, and Cyndi Welch had two hits each. Kylene Wolfe, Susan Jewell and Janet Hitt had one hit each.
In Friday’s game with Clarke County the Panther squad had a 17 to 5 victory. The Panther squad had 21 hits. Cari Kerr went five for five with a triple and a home run. Janet Hitt, Courtney Welch and Angie Atkins had two hits each. Keirsten Kerr and Kylene Wolfe had three hits each and Amy Payne had a single.
Cyndi Welch pitched the whole game giving up five hits, walking two and striking out two.
“It was a good defensive game and a good hitting game,” Coach Payne said.
While the soccer and softball teams were winning Friday, the baseball team lost 13 to 3 to Clarke County. “We made too many errors,” Coach Jason Gochenour said. “You can’t give up four, five or six outs and win a ball game.”
The team also lost to Manassas Park. In that game the team was leading behind Willie Eastham’s pitching when his arm gave out, Coach Gochenour said. He said pitching is generally a problem, but fielding errors are why pitchers have to throw so many pitches in a game. “We haven’t been playing good defense behind any of our pitchers,” he said.
The softball and baseball teams traveled to Luray Monday afternoon for a non-district game. The baseball team lost another game while the softball team won 24 to 10 on a very wet field.
Again Cyndi Welch pitched the whole game. The Panther squad had 19 hits. Susan Jewell led the hitting with four including a home run. Cari Kerr had three hits including a home run. Amy Payne also got three hits. Janet Hitt, Angie Atkins, Courtney Welch had two hits each. Julie Atkins, Tiffany Keys and Courtney Mauro had one hit each. The softball team now has a record of two wins, one tie and three losses.
