Steve Manning of Amissville said that most people find county taxes more of a burden than either state or federal taxes.
Hubert Gilkey, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said county taxes go up to fund mandates from the state and federal governments.
Mrs. Scheer said she would oppose “unfunded mandates.” She said she would favor returning lottery money to the localities to reduce the burden on local taxes.
Mr. Manning disagreed with Mrs. Scheer on widening U.S. 29 north of Warrenton. He said, “The road is packed. I think it should be widened.”
Mrs. Scheer said the plan is to build six lanes for just one mile with three stop lights included in the section. She said that ultimately the plan is to make U.S. 29 limited access, with overpasses and without stoplights. Four lanes would be enough to handle the traffic if it is limited access, she said. , She said the six-lane project is just a “stop gap” measure that would also sacrifice many old trees.
