On The Cover Pictured on the front of this House and Garden special edition is Ashland Farm, a beautiful and historic home in Fauquier County. The | lol/.clavv family acquired Ashland Farm in 1724 and lived there until the 1920s. A portion of the home dates to about 1725 and the main residence was completed by I889. It was remodelled and enlarged in 1929. Between 1861 and 1864, the Union Army stationed pickets at Ashland, as it was used as Federal medical dressing station. Legend claims that a Union Army payroll, is still buried there. The money was allegedly hidden by a paymaster who died in 1862 at nearby Waterloo.
