The teachers and administrators from the two schools who have addressed the committee are very enthusiastic about their new schedules, and neither school seems to have seriously considered the schedule the other school adopted.
With either system classes are 80 to 90 minutes long, compared to the current schedule of seven classes a day, each about 48 minutes. This is the primary advantage of block scheduling. Classes such as laboratory science, art and technology have more time to work on projects. A smaller percentage of time is spent setting up such projects and cleaning up after them. Some such activities which require two class periods under the current system can be completed in one under block scheduling.
But proponents of block scheduling say it also greatly benefits other classes. With 90minute classes teachers cannot spend the whole time lecturing and must engage in more student-centered learning activities. Teachers report they are teaching more creatively. They
