said, although Dewberry and Davis had estimated a cost of S160,000. The planned change will include drawing down the sewage lagoon, removing sludge collected there, installing a liner and then installing a Lemna system. The system uses duckweed held in place by a series of baffles over much of the lagoon to remove nitrogen from the sewage before it is aerated, chlorinated, and dechlorinated and released into a stream.
The school system has about $250,000 available for the project, but the school administration had hoped to use those funds also for other school projects such as installing lights at the student parking lot at the high school and improvements to the high school track and soccer field.
Dr. Gangel said the engineering firm did not think the low' bid could be negotiated much lower, so he recommended the School Board reject all the bids for installing the system and act as the general contractor for the project itself. He said, “I think we can do it for $175,000."
The board approved his recommendation.
Several parents of next year’s fifth graders attended the meeting concerned because plans for the coming year involved having only three sections of fifth grade.
Assistant Superintendent Mary Ann Biggs reported that after studying the staff needs for next year it will be possible to hire a teacher for a fourth section of fifth grade.
At the end of the school year there were 92 students in fourth grade. That class has been in four sections during all their years in elementary school.
Dr. Gangel reported on his visit to the Edgecumbe Conference in Sitka Alaska. He said the conference was organized, by students at Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school for ^Native American students from throughout Alaska. He attended the conference as one of the speakers, but he said he was “humbled" by what he saw at that high school and eager to try to apply some of the concepts used there to the county high school.
One project at the high school involves working with the business community to develop and market products.
One year the class sold smoked salmon to Japan. Next year they plan to provide one-day delivery of fresh seafood.
Dr. Gangel said he plans to pilot a similar class at the high school next year.
