She accused him and Gov. George Allen of leading an “assault on public education” including higher education. “Quality public education is the basis of our society,” she said. “Charter schools are not the answer,” she added, predicting they will be “right-wing religious schools that will not help society.”
She noted that these efforts had been defeated in the 1995 session, but she said, “This will all come back next year, and who will you be represented by?”
She said the governor “with the backing” of Del. Katzen has gone after the conservationists and the environment, libraries and historic buildings. “We have to be aware of what is happening and reverse it,” she said.
Mrs. Scheer said the district needs someone who “will represent us. He represents the governor.”
