Unbelievably, nearly 60 percent of all proposed cuts in transportation assistance would be taken from public transportation and Amtrak, even through such funding only constitutes 15 percent of the U.S. Department of Transportation budget.
On the other hand, highway subsidies — which add up to 52 percent of the DOT’s funds — would end up absorbing just one-quarter of the $24.4 billion in proposed budget reductions. Those highway cuts that are included come mainly from “Highway Demonstration” projects, such as the ill-advised Corridor H — projects that Congress often imposes on local officials, whether they are needed or not. Rep. Frank Wolf, played a key role in putting the House on record in opposition to this longstanding pork-barrel process.
