Last week' the school administration learned the sewer line from the new addition to the elementary school was inadvertently connected to a pipe designed to carry rain water off the school roof not the main sewer line.
As a result sewage from the addition has been discharging into a small stream that runs behind the play area instead of into the sewage lagoon.
According to Richard Smith, learning environment coordinator, last Monday Donna Chabot and Troy Jenkins had come from the Sperryviile sewer plant to the school to clean the sewer line, which was backed up. They found a manhole cover in the play area and checked it. They realized it was a storm water line not the sewer line but were puzzled because liquid seemed to be traveling through the it when there was no rain. They found the sewer line and cleaned it.
Mr. Smith said Ms. Chabot returned Tuesday to explore further and found the sewage draining into a normally dry creek bed. The school system shut off use of the water in the addition, marked the play area off limits for children and contacted the state Department of Environmental Quality, State Health Department, architect and contractor for the project.
