Fifteen candidates running in this fall’s elections, including five running unopposed, showed up to speak to a large crowd at the Amissville Fire Hall the night of August 15.
Jack Atkins, president of Amissville Fire and Rescue, was the emcee for the evening. He informed the candidates, “If anyone goes over three minutes we will hose them down to cool them off.”
Jay Katzen, incumbent representative for our 31st District, was the first speaker. He said that the election coming up this fall is Virginia’s most important election in modern historv.
He said he supports the direct and full return of lottery funds to our localities, and that parents should play a key role in their children’s education. “We don't need the folks who have blocked the pledge of allegiance in our public schools and the same people who trivialize the importance of home schooling,” he said. He added that he voted for an additional 13.8 percent for Rappahannock County public schools for the fiscal years 1993-1996.
“We need a return to discipline and basics...we need new prisons. We cannot have our youth and you threatened by the criminals out on the street,” said Mr. Katzen. He said that
