Ron Makela is running for the school board against Rick Wood in Jackson District. He unfurled a small American flag which he held up for all to see and led the panel and audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mr. Makela reminded everyone that this is the First time that school board candidates are being elected. He said he feels that the schools have gotten away from teaching history, civics and what our flag means. He said people should be less interested in money and more interested in helping their fellow man.
Opponent Rick Wood announced that he is a bom again Christian. He said that with 50 employees, he has to look at budgets all the time, and that the school budget is definitely something he would have to look at.
He explained that he pulled his children out of the public schools here because of a lack of disciplinary action taken in the schools. His oldest daughter presently attends JMU, but his son will be returning to RCHS this year. He and his wife are hoping to home school their youngest daughter. He feels that people should have a choice of education.
Mr. Wood said that he thinks government is too much in the schools today. “ He said he looks to the Bible for answers.
