Gary Settle, who is running for sheriff against incumbenf John Henry Woodward, said he had always wanted to be a police officer. He was hired by the Virginia State Police in 1986 and was in a supervisory position for the past two years.
He said, “We need a full service police department....You, the citizens can work hand in hand with the Sheriff s Office to send a message,” he said. More staff training is a goal. He said that he instructs in a lot of general subject areas and that he can bring the staff’s level of skill up. He also envisions the Sheriff’s Office as accountable for funds spent. “We need to be fiscally responsible as far as money is concerned,” he said.
Sheriff John Henry Woodward said that he has been with the Sheriffs Office for 15 years, 12 of those as sheriff. Averaged over the last four years, his office has a clearance rate of 45 percent, compared to the average state rate of 26.4 percent. The clearance rate is the percentage of crimes solved.
