Mr. Welch said he believes it is time for a change and that he thinks the next 10 years will be as critical as the last 100. He said he was opposed to the fire tax, which he feels is not a fair tax.
“We have a school board budget, that takes over 60 percent of taxes raised in Rappahannock. We have to monitor it,” he said. He believes that people should give something back to the county, and feels that more people should volunteer for county organizations.
Several candidates who are running unopposed also attended the meeting and spoke.
Bob Anderson, on the Board of Supervisors from StonewallHawthorn District, said that he and his wife both work pretty hard in the county to help with government. He said when he moved out here, he thought, “This can’t last for long,” though he admitted the county has not grown as fast as he thought it would.
Mr. Anderson said that he and Colonel Bingham don’t agree on where the fire tax should come from. “1 think any time you tax agriculture you are inviting a farmer to sell part of his land to pay the taxes,” he said.
