If all goes according to plans it will he possible for library patrons to “browse the Internet” at the library.
The county library has subscribed to the Internet through SMA, an internet provider that makes the service available through a toll-free call to a Culpeper number. SMA is making this service available to the library on a trial basis for free. Library patrons who wish to take advantage of the service to do research can sign up for one hour. They must sign up one week in advance.
At the beginning of this week librarian Patty Holmes said the system is hooked up and running, but the library was waiting for a separate telephone line to be installed so using the Internet does not tie up the fax line.
Mike Platko from SMA was at the library on the morning of Saturday, August 12, to demonstrate what is possible. After a talk on using the Internet and a series of questions and answers, he tried to do a demonstration. It didn’t work, but most of the 25 or so people present for the talk were sympathetic.
Mr. Platko said the company has about 12 Rappahannock customers currently. SMA has three lines available for their Rappahannock customers, he said. The basic charge is $39 per month, which can be reduced to $33 per month by purchasing an annual subscription. This allows up to
