Starting Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27, the Shenandoah National Park will begin collecting fees from those who hike Old Rag Mountain.
The $3 fee for those 16 and older is supposed to help cover the costs of administering a permit system, parking, toilets, trail patrols, emergency response and trail maintenance. Permits will be limited to the capacity of the rented parking lot approximately .8 mile from the trail head. That parking lot has space for about 200 cars.
The park tried the permit system last fall in response to complaints from neighbors in Madison County along Route 600 that people were illegally parking along the road and leaving litter. The parking area at the trail head can hold only a few cars. There was no charge for the permit during the trial period, and the rented parking lot never filled up. So hikers were not turned away.
