Mr. Frazier wanted to make deep-' er cuts in the school budget but did not say specifically what they should be. He said he could not support a school budget that would result in increased taxes. “I’ve got people who are losing their jobs,” he said. “There is bitter opposition to the amount of the raises^ when people are losing their jobs.”
Mr. Estes suggested Dr. Gangel come to the supervisors with a request’ for funds to improve the bathrooms at* the high school if he can cover the cost by not spending all of this year’s budget. He suggested the supervisors would also consider improvements to the track with surplus funds.
Before taking up the school budget the supervisors allowed people in the audience to speak. Harold Thrower said, “I feel we are not getting the performance we are paying for.” He suggested the supervisors look carefully at the budget before approving it.
His wife Monica said she had. worked as a substitute teacher in the , high school and “the discipline problems were so terrible. The children were not getting the benefit of the teaching.”
Forrest Whorton said the supervisors should look harder at the budget “and see if there is any way possible' , to do this without raising our taxes.”"’
Kathryn Treanor said, “It is^very important to look to the future and not look to blame the past.”
Rick Kohler said, “It is up to you to lead the county towards improving the'' schools....You should take the leadin' moving forward and not letting us -fall’ backward.” '•'r'
