“Shenandoah National Park has an alarming backlog of over $12 million in facility maintenance; additionally funds have not been available to document and transcribe history from first-hand observers of life on the Blue Ridge before Shenandoah National Park was created,” said Vaughn Baker, Assistant Superintendent at Shenandoah.
According to the grant application, the Shenandoah National Park was created in 1935 to preserve not just a natural setting, but also a unique culture and history extending back to the German and Scots-Irish settlements of the 18th century. To help record and document these vanishing cultural resources, Friends of the Shenandoah National Park will begin a systematic prpgram for obtaining oral histories.
The materials provided will assist the park in repairing and improving some of the park structures used for visitor interpretation, rebuilding display boards located throughout the park, restoring portions of historic structures like the National Historic Landmark, Camp Hoover, and repairing damage to historic structures caused by the blizzard of January 19%.
