National Park Service (NPS) Director Roger Kennedy lauded the National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA) and GeorgiaPacific Corporation for awarding $184,500 in cash and construction supplies to four national park “friends” groups. The money will be used for infrastructure improvement projects at Ocmulgee National Monument, Georgia; Shenandoah National Park, Virginia; Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee; and Virgin Islands National Park, Virgin Islands.
The Friends of the Shanandoah National Park recieved $50,000 of the money, the largest of the four grants.
“The National Parks are landscapes and shrines, places of wonder arid reverence, places of recreation and enjoyment,” said Mr. Kennedy. “But, many of the structures, trails, and visitor facilities were built a generation or rr\9^e ago, and are worn out. Beneath tl^e. paint and caulking and repairs, the National Park System is ridden with rot.
