The Rappahannock Athjetic Association, which runs the Stuart Field complex, receives approximately $1,200.00 from the county. The RCHS Athletic Department receives money to cover bus drivers for away athletic trips and pay some of their coaches a small stipend. The Sport Department has to raise its own money to cover large ticket items such as referee and umpire fees. In addition are the small and mundane items like baseballs and first aid equipment. In this respect, the athletes and parents at the high school are aware that the county government is apparently unable to provide even a symbolic budget for the other needs of the high school sports teams.
To set the record straight, almost all of the field maintenance at the high school is and has been done by volunteers. When it was built, the site work for the present softball field was done for free, as a donation. Each spring for the past six years several people have donated the use of their own machinery and time to prepare the softball and baseball fields for the upcoming season. This spring, heavy equipment time was donated along with soil to resurface the baseball field. These individuals receive no renumeration from the county. Several high school coaches have donated their entire coaching stipend to either buy equips ment. Some of the coaches donated their time and receive no stipend. The high school soccer field is laid out, lined, and painted primarily by volunteers from the Rappahannock Soccer League, which is not connected to th£ school system. The new soccer goals, at the high school, were even provided by the RSL.
