Yes, it can be a source of pollution when it’s not managed properly, but today it also has many valuable uses. Applying manure to fields helps replace nutrients in the soil. Spreading broiler litter on an unreclaimed strip mine brought it back to life with flourishing grass and trees. Dried animal waste is now gaining favor among organic gardeners and farmers as a potting medium or soil component.
Pesticides are another necessary part of farming but they too are changing to meet environmental needs. By using a system called integrated pest management, farmers base pesticide use on actual need as determined by .close examination of the crops in question. Only when the pests reach threshold levels are pesticides used. Another innovation is the pesticides themselves. Today they are formulated to be more efficient so less is needed to do an effective job. Ancl sometimes the best pesticide is not another chemical but activity another pest. For instance, researchers are studying the use of the stink bug to combat the potato beetle; the stink bug eats the larvae and eggs of the beetle.
The environment is also benefiting from the use of renewable and biodegradable agricultural products as replacements for many common items.
