The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR, met on Sunday afternoon March 9 at the Precious Blood Catholic Church in Culpeper for the annual Awards Tea.
Honored were seven area students from Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties. Three students were winners of the American History Essay contest, a yearly national contest sponsored by the DAR. Four students were the winners of the Good Citizenship Award, also a yearly national contest sponsored by the DAR for high school seniors.
The Regent, Mrs. Irvin R. Kilby, welcomed DAR members, students and their families, and guests to the afternoon ceremony.
Two CAR (Children of the American Revolution) members of the Ashby’s Gap Club took part in the opening ceremonies — Robert Ryan II led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States and Patrick Ryan led the group in repeating the American’s Creed.
Mrs. John Marshall Cheatwood, chairman of the American History Month Committee, gave the topic the students were to use for their essays — “Westward Expansion.”
The Bronze Medal winner from the seventh grade at Rappahannock Elementary School was David Massie whose subject was ‘The Mormons.”
The Bronze Medal winner from the eighth grade at Wakefield Country Day School was Alexandra VanBuren whose subject was “The Cumberland Gap.”
