Mr. Tompkins said that one of the big issues during the town’s July 4th celebration will be parking, as the lot normally used on Main St. next to the Health Dept, is being used by The Inn for a construction staging area and will be unavailable.
The 1997 Town of Washington Bank Franchise Tax Ordinance was adopted unanimously. The town will receive about $ 10,000 as a result of the ordinance.
Council member Steve Critzer discussed a water system upgrade. In an effort to make the water system dependable, he said the town was looking at spending $15,000 for a generator, and that a used one with anything under 5000 hours on it would be acceptable.He said that razing the well house and making the backup well able to be utilized would have the highest priority.
The Council agreed to advertise a joint public hearing with the Town Planning Commission for the next meeting to look at ordinance definitions.
In public forum, Nina Norman, who works with a program for at-risk youth called EDGE, sponsored by the Dept, of Social Services, said she wondered if the Council would consider allowing her group to use the Town Hall Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 for group activities and counselling. She explained that she is just beginning to explore possible places for the group to meet, as they now meet at the elementary school and there is a confidentiality problem having it there.
Council members discussed it and questioned whether they would want to commit to having the Town Hall being used so much. Mayor Willis said that he was concerned about committing to so many hours and that he felt the use went beyond what they were thinking of for the use of the Town Hall. Mr. Gooch said he thought it was something worthy of consideration and that it would be nice to give something back to the community.
The Council promised to think about it further and discuss it again at the next meeting.
Diana Bird, saying that she was acting totally on her own, asked the Council if they might consider exhibiting paintings of Robin Purnell’s at the Town Hall while she is in Khazakstan for three years beginning this summer. She explained that Mrs. Purnell did
