A new ingredient, said Eve, is local cabinetmaker James Jennings who designs custom cabinets.
“I do traditionally-styled cabinetry, such as built-in bookcases, and make them appear commonplace, as if they were built in to the original building or were built in an old home. They are very custom and very traditional.”
“I try to build things that look as if they’ve been there for some time but afford modem coveniences and are affordable. It’s basically modem cabinetry with historically sensitive design. The reason I design them this way is because modem cabinetry is so jarring and visually out of place,” he said.
James also said he loves working out of Gay St. Mercantile because the spaces siuts him so well because it is the style he favors — it has old counters and built-in cabinet space. He is interested in building step back cupboards and free standing cabinetry.
Much of the charm of the Mercantile is due to the creative hand of Eve who is an interior designer. She worked in the field of residential and contract design for 30 years in upstate New York, down the East Coast into North Carolina, and even did some work in Holland.
