After each one had read his/her essay, Mrs. Kilby pinned on the Bronze Medal pin and presented each with a certificate explaining the honor.
Chairman of the Good Citizens Committee, Mrs. Thomas L. Eastham, presented the Good Citizen Awards to one senior from each of the county high schools- plus Wakefield Country Day School. For this, both Faculty and senior students contribute to the selection of the senior to receive this award considering the qualities of Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism. Each received a special certificate, a Good Citizen pin, a $50 savings bond and a book titled “Leaders in Liberty” from the DAR Museum in Washington.
The four so honored were Christina Marie Tilley from Culpeper High School, Cornell Anthony Sims from Madison County High School, Anna F. Metcalfe from Rappahannock County High School and Laura Vivenne Cowherd from Wakefield Country Day School.
For the contest, all had to write an essay on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility to Preserve It” without previous preparation or any material of any kind with them.
Following, the program, Mrs. Kilby invited all to a lovely tea served by the hostesses, Mrs. John H. McDevitt, III and Miss Marylee Newman.
The next meeting will be at the Rappahannock County Library on April 8 with the program being “Mr. Pocohontas — The Story of John Rolfe.”
