(In the winter of 1990, Franklin and Esther Schmidt spent three days with newly elected Lt. Governor Don Beyer preparing a story about him for Virginia Country Magazine. Last week, they were with him when he closed out the Virginia Senate for his last time. He ends his tenure of eight years as the Senate’s presiding officer.
