Thornton’s Gap Primitive Baptist Church met at 3 o’clock p.m. on Saturday, March 15 for a Hymn Singing Service. We had forty-two present, which included six Elders and one Licentiate. The Elders were: Elmer Skeen, Raymond Pressley, Toliver Utz, Duane Fletcher, Gary Utz and Forest Atwood; the Licentiate was Brother David Roberts.
Sister churches represented were: Battle Run of Flint Hill, Happy Creek of Front Royal, Mount Carmel of Luray, Robinson River of Brightwood, Thumb Run of Marshall and Barrows Run of Opal, Virginia.
Sweet fellowship prevailed. Voices were lifted in praise to our Sovereign Lord God, and tables groaned with the bounty of food laid thereon provided for our physical nourishment. From infants to eightyeight they came despite the chilly evening, and despite many personal disabilities or ailments.
The dear old church at Thornton’s Gap will be celebrating its 210th anniversary in November 1997, that'is the body or members and not the building or meeting house. The building was ereeted in 1916, as the third house of worship for this old congregation. Previous to that date they met on the hill at the location of the other Thornton’s Gap Church, in another building built in the 1830’s.
