The DARE SHOW ‘97, held at the Manassas Regional Airport on May 20, was attended by 12,000 fifth and sixth graders from throughout Northern Virginia.
All of the fifth graders from Rappahannock County Elementary School, totalling about 85, attended the event. The show was sponsored by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Virginia DARE Association (DARE officers), Northern Virginia Chapter of the State Police, Manassas City Police and Prince William County Police. ; The show is the largest event of its kind in the world.
The day was dedicated to reinforcing the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) message: “Stay in school and remain drug and violence free — it’s the key to the future.”
There were several highlights of the air show. During the opening ceremony, while the National Anthem was being sung, a U.S. Air Force F-117 Stealth Fighter flew over the airport three times, to the delight of everyone in attendance. It was truly an awesome sight.
Another very impressive aircraft, a U.S. Air Force A-10, took off from the airport and demonstrated how a ground attack would take place, complete with pyrotechnics by the “Mad Bomber.”
During the whole show, which lasted from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., aerobatic performances were put on, drill teams performed and police K-9 — demonstrations took place. Olympic swimmer Jeff Rouse was also there signing autographs.
