be thinned to 12 inches apart in rows spaced 30-36 inches apart.

There are three types of com, the regular sweet varieties, the sugar enhanced hybrids, and the super sweet hybrids. These types need to be separated from one another either by 350 feet of space or by maturation time to ' prevent cross-pollination in order to , maintain the best qualities of each. Recent corn-breeding efforts are 1 focused on the sugar enhanced type, which is more than twice as sweet as old-fashioned sweet com and is easier to germinate than the super sweet hybrids. New breeding aside. Silver Queen, a old-fashioned sweet white com, is extremely popular in Virginia. Our family favorites by far. are two yel- r low corns of the super sweet class, Butterfruit and IHini Gold. One ' matures a week later than the other; we plant both at the same time, successive- i ly for three plantings through mid-July. !

Com is a heavy feeder; at planting time the rows should be side-dressed with nitrogen. This should be repeated when the plants are knee-high. Com also requires abundant water, especially from tasseling time to picking time. Harvest follows the first appearance of silk by about three weeks. Most varieties produce two ears per plant, with ‘ the second, lower ear a day or two later than the first.
