My favorite bush bean variety is Jumbo, a Romano bean that has an unusually long picking season for a bush bean. The season length is a result of having crossed Kentucky Wonder pole and Romano bush beans to produce Jumbo. It is an extremely heavy producer, and beans picked very large do not lose the quality of small beans, as happens with most varieties. Greensleeves is another variety that retains small-bean quality in mature beans very well.
Like tomatoes, beans should not be over fertilized, to avoid producing lush foliage at the expense of beans. Extreme heat can slow bean production. Mexican bean beetle is a serious pest problem some years, but times is only a minor nuisance. Beetles overwinter in garden litter, so clean culture is a significant preventative measure.
Because sweet com requires considerable space, it is not appropriate for smaller gardens. Both crowding plants and inadequate pollination as a result of planting in single rows rather than blocks cause crop failure. A planting should consist of at least four rows, and preferably more.
