This is the proper procedure for rescuing a bird when it hits a window and drops to the ground below. If the bird has not been killed by the collision it can usually be saved. The important thing is to pick up the bird as soon after the window strike as possible, hold it as described and get it into a quiet, dark place. There, if the bird is just stunned, it will recover.
When dazed by impact with glass, the bird is aware of its surroundings but cannot move or react. It is a bit like the frightening situation when one is having a nightmare; terror demands that we run, yet We are unable to move. Noise and quick movement around the stunned bird can increase the terror to the point where the heart beats so rapidly that blood vessels in the brain burst. Death is the result. Leaving the bird on the ground won’t work; the bird is too conscious of surroundings. Besides, cats are quick to find a stunned bird. Darkness and silence usually result in recovery.
