Governor George Allen has declared May to be Foster Care Month in the state of Virginia.
Children in foster care can range from the age of a newborn to 18 years old. In Rappahannock County, there are presently nine children placed in four different foster homes, and more foster parents are needed to take care of teenaged children, said Valerie Ward, the Foster Care Social Worker at the Dept, of Social Services (DSS) in Washington. There are 10 fully approved homes for foster care in Rappahannock County.
In the state of Virginia during 1996,40.6 percent of foster children in care were between the ages of 13 to 18, with the next highest group, 21.4 percent, being 1 to 5 year olds. The children are about evenly distributed between boys and girls.
