In a half hour, Lee retrieved the paper bag. There was the gentle sound of movement from inside. With a nod from me, Lee took the bag outside and carefully opened it. Immediately the bird flew out and away. The result was a happy grunt from me, I had been watching from the door. Lee had a satisfied smile when she came inside. Both of us have great fondness for Chickadees’ they are full of optimism, life and energy.
Since that event of recovery and release, Lee is quite sure she recognizes ‘her’ chickadee from the five or six that constantly visit the feeder. I’m not so sure; yet, I indulge her on this. A careful observance of behavior can distinguish individual birds. I have known several people who had this sensitive level of perception. All have been girls or women. Do women have a greater sensitivity and higher level of patience in working with birds, or, for that manner, any wildlife? The answer may lie in the fact that the most successful studies of primates (gorillas, chimpanzees, etc.) are made by women.
