Two apply
for seat
on board

The Rappahannock County School Board will soon choose a replacement for the seat left vacant by Piedmont District School Board Member Dennis Wingfield. The cut off for those applying for consideration by the board for the position was Tuesday.
Applying as candidates are: Dorothy C. Butler and Aline B. Johnson.
Wingfield said he had heard various interpretations on why he resigned and felt the matter should be made clear. He left the board due to dismay and disagreement with the way a board decision concerning a line item on this year’s school budget was handled, he said. The item concerned a step-increase for a school system employee.
Wingfield said the board had, by consensus at it$jMarch meeting, decided to approve the stepincrease. He said a couple of weeks later he got a call from School Board Chair Dr. John Tble who told him that they (the other four members of the boa^d) had decided to “take back the decision” concerning that step-increase.
He said he told Tble that he did not think decisions of the board should be made by phone and in fact it was a questionable proceedure.
He also told Tble he felt the entire matter had not been properly handled.
Wingfield said he got a call from another board member also saying they had changed their minds on the matter on the same day.
