Spring wild flowers make a delicate, vulnerable picture. They seem so fragile. It is an illusion. Spring’s tender treacheries of sudden cold, abrupt wind and sudden high heat cause no difficulties for these plants. They have known years beyond counting of sudden changes; they easily adjust to spring in Virginia, even springs as unusual as this one.
Spring beauty, Claytonia virginica, has small flowers with five pale pink, sometimes white, petals. Each petal has darker lines of crimson that guide pollinators, early solitary bees, to the chart of the flower.
