Water system update
Willis reported that loan money is not available from the Rural Development Administration. The town would have to resubmit its request, including the engineering report from Greeley and Hansen. He also provided cost estimates for the pump alarms, expansion tank, generator, etc. No response has been received so far.
He added that “part of the pump house blew apart” dpe to plastic fatigue. The town water system “ran for a few days off the old pump.” Repairs were being completed last Wednesday. According to the mayor, three other joints look weak and should be replaced before the next council convenes. Critzer commented that a three and a half inch check valve also needed to be installed. The council voted unanimously to appropriate almost $6,000 from unallocated excess income for the project.
Other discussion centered on a diagnostic review of the valves. Van Dort added a $2,500 line item to next year’s budget for a six-inch valve to help minimize a catastrophic water main break. “We know we have several valves that have flow on the shut off side of valve,” said Critzer. “The iron and manganese in the water corrodes the valves” which then don’t seat properly and leak under the system’s high static pressure.
The town installed a filtration system to remove the corrosives, but many of the valves are already damaged. Critzer also asked that plans be included to lay a parallel sixinch pipe and “go to Piedmont Avenue and locate another well for the town.” He proposed contacting the state geologist for assistance.
