School Board to fill seat for Piedmont
District public should voice opinions
The Rappahannock County School Board will soon
be choosing a replacement to fill the seat left
vacant by the recent resignation of board member Dennis Wingfield, representative for the Piedmont District. Two people have signed up for consideration by the board, (see story, Page Al).
Citizens should call their board representative or the superintendent of schools and voice their opinion, if indeed they have one, about whom should fill the seat. This is the only way citizens may have a voice in the person chosen to replace Wingfield at this time.
Although the school board members are now elected, a new member must be appointed by the board to fill in during the interim. The other board members are: Rosa Crocker, Wakefield District; Dr. John Tole, chair, StoneWall-Hawthome District; Ron Makela, Jackson District; and Bryant Lee, Hampton District.
A special election will be held in November so residents may vote for a person to fill that position on the board until the next regular election in 1999.
Although the person nominated will represent the Piedmont District all county residents should be concerned as to the choice to be made by the board. The person chosen will have to work together with other board members to make decisions which affect all aspects of the school system in the county.
That will, consequently, directly affect the children and the taxpayers — two very good reasons for any citizen to get involved.
