Sidewalk repairs
Van Dort reported that VDOT has three different budgets for sidewalk installation and maintenance. Based on past practice, she thought that “if we volunteer to take care of a piece of the sidewalks, maybe we will get what we need.” Several projects are proposed, including a section in front of the church, another in front of the county Health Department on Main Street, one in front of the courthouse, and installation of a piece to cover the dangerous culvert across from the Thrift Store. “For our tourist industry, and especially for our elderly folks, it’s something we ought to do,” said Van Dort. Gooch agreed, calling it “money well spent.”
Recycling/trash
service
The council discussed last month’s proposal to include residential trash pickup and recycling costs in the new budget. Council member Reinhardt Lynch opposed the suggestion that business trash should be added, even though, as co-owner of The Inn, he would benefit from the service.
“As a council member, -1 think it w'ould b 1 a mistake (for the town) to be in the business of trash removal,” he said. He also observed that trash service was not one of the chief concerns identified during Herd’s vision sessions. Gooch agreed, saying that residential pickup “takes care of the elderly and recycling.” Van Dort will add the residential line item to the budget draft.
Masonic cemetery
In new business, Willis reported that he had been approached by the local Masonic chapter for the town to assume responsibility for the Masonic Cemetery. The Masons propose to turn over a $50,000 Certificate of Deposit, which generates approximately $3,500 in interest annually, to fund maintenance of the cemetery. The issue was tabled pending a report from the town attorney.
