important home health services. “I grew up in a very small town where everyone was so neighborly,” said Joseph. “It just did my heart good to know there were still people like Melinda around. She was trying to do anything she could to help me.”

A graduate of George Mason University’s four-year nursing program, Beach worked- at several northern Virginia hospitals, gaining “a lot of experience and learning a little bit of everything.” The home health program at Fauquier Hospital prepared her for future duties as the only public health nurse in the county. Going to peoples’ houses and dealing with the whole family “ is where nursing (as a profession) is going,” she explained. “You don’t just treat the patient, you treat the whole family.” She joined the health department staff in 1995.
