Finally, within the council are two appointed posts, that of vice mayor and town clerk. Members of the council elect the office holders from within the council itself. The vice mayor’s responsibilities are similar to that of a vice president. In the absence of the mayor, the vice mayor becomes presiding officer of council meetings and performs any other official duties required. The town clerk position is not described in the charter. It exists primarily to provide a second official, “authenticating” signature on documents required by the state, said Reynolds.
