From the window of my little study I see a redbud tree covered in pink flowers. The date is April 5. By the time this reaches readers in midApril, the dark pink blossoms will have faded and been carried off by an April wind. This spring of 1998 is the earliest in my memory.
The redbud reminds me of a phrase I came across while reading late on a cold January night. It was in a nature essay; I neither remember the title nor the author. I did jot down the phrase: “outwitted by the rush of seasons.”
At the time, the little collection of words caught my attention because it expressed the way I feel about spring in late April and early May when the changes in the natural world are moving too fast for me.
