It seems to me that nature has provided for any circumstance — any abrupt change in temperature or wind. Evolution has cast a protective net of insurance over all native plants. Those brought from other continents are a( the mercy of the vagaries of Virginia springs.
I posted the slip of paped on which I wrote “outwitted by spring” on the wall of my study. Next to it is another which has only two words:; “intricate harmonies.” Those words may apply to music, of course. For me they describe' the natural world that is causing me such joy — along with my own impatience with myself.
In my column on maples a' few weeks back, I wrote of the; Norway maple: “Its’ yellow-* green flowers won’t appear until late April or early may.” I was wrong!
Today the tree is a mass of not only flowers but delicate, new leaves. See what I mean by being “outwitted by spring?”
