In the past 10 years, the budget has grown from approximately $30-40,000 a year to over $200,000 today, more than a 500 percent increase. Because the town is in a period of some growth, both the budget and the treasurer’s responsibilities are also growing, making both the position and its importance more critical to the town residents.
The importance of the position is reflected in the statutory requirement that the treasurer be bonded. Many people think that a bond is like insurance; that is, the bonding company will replace money lost through embezzlement or error. The company will replace it, but a bond is more correctly compared to bailbonding than insurance. Reynolds explained that the individual who is bonded becomes personally liable for repaying the bond company for any money they pay out, regardless of the reason.
