This is the first in a series of stories profiling the men and women behind the scenes in the Rappahannock Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Don Deitrich is one of five officers in the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office who work as jailers but, as hell tell you. being a jailer does not mean you just sit and guard the jail. In fact, being a jailer is akin to being a kind of hotel manager only his “guests” don’t check out.
Deitrich is the first line supervisor at the jail here. Capt. Mitch Hitt is the chief jailer. Deputies Mark Currence, Steve Scott and Andy Berry are the other jailers and sometimes Deputy James Leake, who fills the court services position, also doubles as a jailer. They work on split shifts.
