De’Danann Glassworks, located at Oldway Art Center, will be hosting the second annual workshop of Don McKinney, nationally known beadmaker. Don was here last year and taught in the De’Danann studio. His classes were a great experience and students came from as far as Maryland to study with him.
Don McKinney owns and operates the “Glass Palette” studio in Peoria, Ariz. He has been a glass artist for 20 years. He is considered a master in the art of hot glass, his speciality being torch made marbles and beads. He is famous for his “fish” bead, which is distributed through various handmade bead catalogs. He teaches at Corning, N.Y., and at several glass workshops throughout the country.
The methods by which he creates his bead is called Lampworking. A propane oxygen torch is used to melt the glass rod on to a mandrel (steel rod). Hot glass is added and manipulated to form whatever style bead desired. Then the bead is annealed in a special bead kiln, (which Don manufactures when he’s not making beads and teaching), so the bead slowly cools to room temperature.
