Vines should be pruned regularly to prevent them from becoming overgrown and unattractive. Remove dead wood and thin stems and branches, removing excessive vines that are inclined to grow over other plants and structures not intended to support their weight. Some fast-growing vines need to be severely cut back to encourage growth close to the ground and will not be harmed if pruned in the spring before new growth starts. Proper pruning also promotes new, healthy growth and improves flowering on less vigorous and invasive vines.

To properly prune and maintain a vine, it is important to know how the vine climbs and what type of support it requires. One group of vines climbs by attachment to the wall or support with rootlike holdfasts or modified tendrils with circular discs. A second group climbs by winding tendrils around a wire support or trellis, while others climb by twining the vine itself around the support. Some use a combination of these techniques.
