It is a demographic truth that Rappahannock County boasts more master furniture makers than pizza shops, and that is unusual.
It is also true that most of Rappahannock’s artisans direct their craft toward construction of colonial reproductions and other traditionally-styled pieces.
One such craftsman has a somewhat different calling.
Bob Lucking does build traditional furniture, but his real love is the creation of unique furniture through the blending of technical ability and the vision of an artist.
Lucking’s skills are reflected in a traditional cherry wood dining table that he just finished in his shop behind the Sperryville Antique Market.
The joinery was flawless — the grain in the tablet was perfectly matched. Through the hand-planing and care of his apprentice, Matt Lynn, the table was satisfyingly proportioned.
■ Special craftsmanship
But this table is simply another wonderfully manufactured piece — one that could be made by any master furniture builder.
What cannot be readily duplicated by any master craftsman are his oriie-of—kind creations, in this case a table — that was rendered on paper when I first visited.
