Chickadees and titmice gave up trying to get sunflower seeds from among the much larger birds on the feeder. I had filled the domed Droll Yankee feeder — hanging from the maple tree — several days ago. This gave the smaller regulars a high and dry supply of sunflower seed. Goldfinches quickly joined the Chickadees at this food source.
On occasion a jay swooped down for a peanut which is in this mix of seed, called the Chickadee Mix. We discovered this new mix at The Bird Feeder in Winchester and are pleased with the results.
This morning, Wednesday, the day after the snow fell, a flock of perhaps 25 male Redwinged Blackbirds descended on the feeder. Their jet black plumage, set off by orange and yellow shoulder patches, provided contrast in a white world.
