under the feeder. Fox Sparrows are masters of the double-scratch. I watched as one excavated a buried seed supply from the snow; the bird had scratched out a depression at least an inch deep.
As I was editing one of these columns in my little study, Lee came in to report a towhee. The reddish-brown, black and white bird — the size of a Cardinal — was busy feeding under the steps that led up from the back yard. This is a favorite feeding place for a number of birds. There, they have a measure of protection from swooping hawks and the seed is not so quickly covered by snow.
At noon all birds suddenly froze. The snow-covered privet bush, from which the birds launch themselves to the feeders, was decorated by immobile Cardinals, brilliant against all the whiteness.
