“They basically destroyed the interior of this grand old mansion,” remarked Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz, after witnessing the vandalism committed last week at Montpelier, an 18th century plantation house on Rt. 231. “I can’t even describe what I saw.”
The property is owned by the four daughters of the late James W. Fletcher. The main house has not been lived in many years, and is in clear view of Rt. 231.
According to Sherertz, the crime occurred sometime on May 18 or May 19. His office received a call from one of the owners who lives in Richmond at about 4 p.m. on May 20, asking that a deputy meet her at the scene.
Damage discovered
The owner had been informed of the damage earlier in the day by a person authorized to come on to the property. Apparently, the visitor had first noticed the broken windows, and upon reaching the main house, heard water running inside.
